Cash in the Attic comes to Cirencester
‘Trains and Boats and Planes’ the song by Burt Bacharach could have been a theme tune for The Cotswold Auction Company’s Antiques sale with Toys on Friday 12th March – or perhaps, and I do hope Aled Jones will forgive me - ‘Walking in the air’!!  Aled Jones was the presenter for the day for the BBC television programme ‘Cash in the Attic’ which was filming the Cirencester sale at The Bingham Hall. The Cash in the Attic team had brought some interesting items to put up for auction, which, luckily for all concerned, realised some good prices.  The top price was £750 paid for a large collection of gold jewellery which included a gold charm bracelet , gem set rings and other gold jewellery. This brought huge smiles to the participants of the programme. Another high seller was a superb Chinese silver bowl, lavishly decorated with ferocious dragons and dragon handles, this realised £560. A pair of George V silver table candlesticks marked Sheffield 1918 sold for £260, though some less desirable 1970s Bay City Roller autographs only managed £12! It is hoped that the monies raised by the two families reached their targets for whatever had been on their wish lists!
Vintage Toys are Tops
The Bingham Hall saleroom was packed for the Specialist Toys Sale with avid collectors of the Hornby , Dinky, model planes and other models on offer. Top price for the model vehicles was £600 paid for a metal live steam 0-6-0 part built Loco. Another similar realised £550 and a lesser one £280. Bidding was keen both in the room and on the phones.  Matchbox vehicles in their original boxes, in good condition, are always highly sought after and Friday’s sale had a wonderful collection that the vendor had amassed over years. A large quantity of loose and boxed vehicles, some dating from the late 1960’s and 70’s raced to £460 in the room,  the next lot reached £300, while another realised £280. This collection raised over £2000 in total.
All boys want to be train drivers at some point in their lives and failing that they become collectors of trains! A scratch built ‘O’- gauge tinplate electric 4-4-0 loco with a similar 0-6-0 tank loco and rolling stock steamed up to £300 and another lot made £240.
State of the Art – B & O
Electrical goods are not a familiar sight in the saleroom these days  but it was hard for the Auctioneers to resist selling six top of the range flat-screen Bang and Olufsen Beocentre televisions, some with motorized stands. These smart modern icons of the television world created a huge amount of interest and two phones vied for the pleasure of owning them. In the they had to share the spoils. Two reached a hammer price of £1100, the others reaching £680, £600, £550 and £520.
And back to the real world of auctions - an early 19th century polished pine longcase clock by William Hungate, Chelmsford reached a striking £750 and a good example of a 19th century walnut side cabinet with boxwood inlay and applied ormolu mounts found a buyer at £680.
The sale on 12th March was a truly eclectic catalogue of lots with most reaching the estimates advised by the auctioneers. In these somewhat troubled times it is often difficult to estimate a sale price until the item is actually out there for sale, but certainly The Cotswold Auction Company were satisfied with the sale results.
The next sale to be held at the Bingham Hall by The Cotswold Auction Company will be on Friday 26th March commencing at 10am and comprises Silver, Jewellery, Watches, Ceramics, Glass and Oriental Works of Art.
Please go to LinkClick.aspx to have a taster of the jewellery, silver and other beautiful items offered for sale.
