The Cotswold Auction Company directors Lindsey Braune and Liz Poole were saying farewell to one of their most venerable consultants at the Bingham Hall in Cirencester on Thursday 15th May. Peter Woodhead, a lifelong coins enthusiast and specialist, had advised the company on the wide variety of coins brought to their door over the years, sometimes by the bagful! Mr Woodhead has been an ardent collector of coins from an early age, a published author on the subject and a member of the British Numismatic Society, one-time president.
His particular passion was British coins and a long association with Spinks of London led to the sale of “The Peter Woodhead Collection of Short Cross Pennies” in 1990 at a Spinks auction.
“Peter Woodhead has been more than generous with his expertise over the years” said auctioneer Lindsey Braune “providing identification and valuation on gold sovereigns, Roman coins, medieval coins, German and other continental coins and, most recently, identifying an Offa (early Saxon) penny which came under the hammer at £950”.
“We shall be very sad to see Mr Woodhead cease his consultancy work” said auctioneer Liz Poole “as we have relied on his advice for years – always cheerfully given! But we think that at the age of 85, he has certainly earned the time to enjoy his garden.”
A new consultant is set to take up the reins and coins can be brought for valuation to The Cotswold Auction Company’s Cheltenham saleroom or Cirencester office – please phone 01242 256353 or 01285 642520 to arrange or email info@cotswoldauction.co.uk.
